Personalised Support at Bective House Leads to Vital Treatment Adherence for Laura with Acute Kidney Failure
Positive and consistent support is helping a person living at Bective House, an Accomplish supported living service in Northamptonshire, access essential life-saving treatment for an acute medical condition.
Laura* was diagnosed with acute kidney failure and requires dialysis treatment three times a week. At Bective House, she receives six hours of support a day. Laura has a learning disability and requires support to live in the community.
She was diagnosed with acute kidney failure around 12 months after moving to Bective and the team knew she would require additional support to adjust to the life changes it has brought with it.
Laura is reluctant to go to the dialysis sessions which are four hours long each time. She felt the treatment was wasting time and negatively impacting her life and she would miss sessions if she could.
Supporting her on a one-to-one basis, the team worked with Laura to develop strategies to help her tolerate the sessions better. Laura is not keen on television and so that was not an option to help the sessions pass more quickly.
Instead the team spend the time chatting to Laura, keeping her engaged in conversation throughout the session, building on personal interactions and relationships to keep her positive. They encouraged her to look at the sessions as a positive that allows her to stay as well as possible so she can continue to do the things she enjoys.
Laura chooses which members of the staff team she would like to accompany her and those close relationships help to keep her as upbeat as possible in what is an undoubtedly challenging time for her.
Her engagement with the dialysis sessions is improving, although because of her health difficulties Laura has experienced a drop in her confidence. Previously she used to spend most of her time out and about on her own, but has recently asked for more support, which the team are happy provide. They are building up her confidence so she can continue to live as independently as possible, doing the things she enjoys.
Manager Noma Mlauzi said: “I am very proud of the team and how they are positively supporting Laura at what is certainly a very challenging time for her. We think of ourselves as a family here at Bective House and they are making sure that Laura has all the support she needs to stay as healthy as possible, attends her appointments and continues to have the best quality of life possible.”
