Navigating Anxiety at Disneyland Paris with The Power of Positive Behaviour Support
Anya* who lives in an Accomplish supported living service used to experience anxiety on a daily basis but did not want to let that stop her fulfilling her dream to visit a well-known overseas theme park.
She was particularly anxious about people she did not know, crowds and noisy places – all of which makes her achievement of visiting Disneyland Paris even more of a personal success.
Any theme park is, by its very nature, noisy, busy and unpredictable. But, with carefully considered support and Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) planning, Anya very much enjoyed her trip.
To help make the trip happen, as well as generally improve Anya’s quality of life and engagement in activities she enjoys, the PBS team, working closely alongside the experienced and well-established team supporting Anya, understood that it was important for them to say the right things at the right times to help her manage her anxiety and to maximise her confidence.
They also learned not to ‘overthink’ or ‘over-react’ to what was making her anxious as, in reality that was most things outside of her home and was almost having a negative reinforcing effect: “I’m anxious about that and the team with me are reacting to it, so it must be right that I’m anxious about it”.
Because so many things made her anxious, the danger was all interactions with Anya would her anxieties and trying to work out why she had them and overcome them. The team, while never ignoring an anxiety, focused more on helping Anya develop strategies and other focuses so that a worry about something wouldn’t become overwhelming and she could continue to do the things she wanted to do.
As well as her trip overseas, Anya’s use of ‘as and when’ medication to help her manage anxiety has radically reduce. The team supporting Anya describe these positive changes as ‘amazing’.
