Cornwall Supported Living – Thomas Buys His Own House
Home ownership is a dream for many people, and for Thomas it had been a long-held goal to own a house of his own. After several years of living in a local authority rented property, Thomas was recently absolutely delighted to see his dream become reality!
Thomas is supported by the Accomplish Cornwall Supported Living team, who have been supporting him for 10 years. It has been his goal to buy his own house throughout that time.
To prepare him for the responsibility of home ownership, Thomas first “trialled” renting a shared property with another person. With the support of the Supported Living Cornwall team, this proved to be “plain sailing” for Thomas, the team were confident that he would be able to have success in living in his own property, and fully understood the responsibility that came with it.
With the help of his family, Thomas was able to save a deposit for his new home in Liskeard.
The responsibility of owning his own home is one that Thomas takes very seriously. He is very aware of the need for maintenance and upkeep of the property to keep it in good condition, and to ask for support to do this he needs to. He takes full responsibility for budgeting and ensures monthly payments go out on time to the correct people for his mortgage, utilities and other bills. He cleans his own home too.
The Cornwall Supported Living team supports Thomas on a 24/7 basis and a member of the team sleeps in Thomas’ home. While he requires support when he is active in the community, Thomas continues to work with the team to positively reduce that wherever possible.
As if becoming a homeowner wasn’t reason enough to celebrate, Thomas has also just enjoyed celebrating his birthday, the first in his new home. What a great way to celebrate his birthday, achieving his new status as a homeowner.
