Moving Forward at Merstone House: A Story of Growth and Independence
8 May 2026
In March 2026, Daniel*, a person we support at Merstone House, took an important and exciting step forward by moving into his own supported living flat, marking the next stage of his journey towards independence.
Before coming to Merstone House three years ago, Daniel had spent a significant period of time as an inpatient in a secure hospital setting. During this time, he unfortunately lost some independence and everyday living skills, such as cooking, cleaning, budgeting and accessing the community safely. Moving to Merstone House provided Daniel with the opportunity for a fresh start in a more supportive and enabling environment.
Throughout his time at Merstone House, Daniel worked closely with staff to rebuild and develop essential life skills. With consistent encouragement and tailored support, Daniel grew in confidence and began taking greater ownership of his goals and daily routines.
Alongside these practical skills, Daniel achieved several significant personal milestones. He successfully passed his driving test, purchased his own car, and began exploring employment opportunities. With the support of staff and an employment support worker, Daniel worked hard to create a CV and apply for jobs, demonstrating determination, motivation, and commitment to moving forward.
Daniel’s move into supported living reflects his resilience, hard work, and personal growth, alongside the consistent, person-centred support provided by the Merstone House team. This transition represents not just a change in accommodation but a meaningful step towards greater independence, choice, and control over his life.
Everyone involved is incredibly proud of how far Daniel has come and wishes him every success as he continues building a fulfilling and independent future in his new home.
